Skating Rink Safety 101

July 13, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

Roller skating is a great way to have fun and get exercise, and at Rainbow Skateland in Lockport, NY, kids and parents can rest easy knowing they are enjoying a safe, clean environment. But every activity comes with risks. Here are some skating safety tips to follow at any rink. child skating safety gear

  • Use Your Eyes. Look where you’re going, even when you’re skating backwards, and be aware of objects and other skaters in your path. Keep an extra eye out for younger kids or anyone who may have fallen.
  • Skate Safety. Make sure you get the right size skates. If you’re not sure, don’t guess–ask for help! Keep your skates firmly laced at all times. Again, if you need help lacing and tying skates, don’t hesitate to ask a staff member. If you notice your skates are untied, stop skating and tie them immediately. Untied laces are a huge tripping
  • Follow the Rules. This means don’t throw things, push and shove, or trip other skaters. Always skate in the same direction as everyone else. Obey the Rainbow Skateland staff at all times–they are here to make sure kids and adults stay safe while having fun.
  • Dress for Success. Wear comfortable clothing you can move freely in, but that does not drag the ground. NEVER skate without socks. Safety equipment like helmets and knee pads are optional at Rainbow Skateland, but don’t be afraid to wear them if you feel more comfortable!

With a little extra attention to safety, we can all make sure everyone has a good time and stays safe! Parents, feel free to contact Rainbow Skateland with any questions or concerns. We’ll see you at the rink!

Beat the Heat this Summer!

June 26, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

With summer upon it, it’s important to pay attention to the thermostat. Here are some ways to protect yourself from heat this summer.

  • Stay Hydrated – First, make sure you drink enough water! The more you sweat, the more water you lose, so the hotter it gets, the you more you need to drink. Starting the day with a big glass of water before your coffee will give you a great head start. Carrying a reusable water bottle will go a long way towards keeping you hydrated.beat the heat
  • Be Sun Smart – Wear sunscreen of at least SPF 30 any time you’re outside, and reapply after swimming, sweating, or being outside for several hours. Don’t forget the parts of your body you’re likely to miss, like the back of the neck and the tops of the ears. A broad-brimmed hat can help protect these areas as well. Seek the shade when the sun’s rays are most direct, usually between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm. Consider switching to indoor fun activities during these times, like afternoon skating at Rainbow Skateland.
  • Dress Right – Wearing loose, light-colored clothes will help keep you cool. A sundress or loose shorts will keep you way cooler than blue jeans. Also remember that clothes made of natural fibers like cotton, linen, and even bamboo will “breathe” better than polyester and rayon, and be a lot more comfortable to wear when it’s hot outside.

Following these tips will help you stay cool outside this summer. When you’re ready to come inside, check out the great indoor attractions at Rainbow Skateland in Lockport, NY!

Summer Fun Is No Sweat!

May 22, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

Have you ever planned a day at the park only to have the skies open up and ruin your day? Or maybe you’ve been made into lunch by one too many mosquitoes? We all love the outdoors, but indoor play at Rainbow Skateland in Lockport has so many advantages! Here’s a couple of reasons to come play inside this summer.

By planning your summer fun indoors, you can be certain your plans will succeed! A day at Rainbow Skateland means you don’t have to worry about the weather getting in the way. There are no swarms of bugs, rain, storms, or sudden heat waves to worry about.A stick figure sweats under a hot yellow sun

Playing inside also helps avoid sun damage. Did you know up to 1 in 5 people will develop some form of skin cancer in their life? As a major method of prevention, doctors recommend staying out of the sun when its rays are most direct–usually between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Protect yourself and your family this summer by heading indoors for the sunniest parts of the day.

Kids still want to run and jump around even indoors, and parents still want their kids to get plenty of exercise so they’ll be healthy and burn off all that extra energy. Rainbow Skateland has all the attractions for an entire day of active fun. If roller skating doesn’t do the trick, there’s also laser tag and arcade games for everyone, and the Bounce Zone, the ultimate indoor playground, for kids 54 inches and under.

Check out our weekly specials and bring the whole family for active, indoor fun this summer at Rainbow Skateland!

Bounce House Safety 101

April 17, 2017 by intake Leave a Comment

bounce house Our Bounce Zone at Rainbow Skateland is brand new and ready for a bouncin’-good time. This new attraction is filled with bouncers, mazes, obstacle course and slides for your kiddos to jump, bounce and play on! But before you release your kiddos for the ultimate play session of their lives, take a look at this short guide on how you can help keep your kids safe while visiting Rainbow Skateland, below.

  • Before entering, have children take off their shoes, glasses, and jewelry. Make sure they empty their pockets of any sharp objects, as well.
  • Set rules for safe play. Teach children to not roughhouse, tumble, wrestle or do flips. Have them stay away from the entrance or exit, and the sides or walls of the bouncer.
  • Only children age 6 and older should use bounce houses. Younger children may not have the balance, coordination or strength to safely enjoy one.

These are just three ways to keep your kiddos safe while using our bounce houses, but there are of course many other ways to keep them safe also. At Rainbow Skateland, we encourage parents to look into ways to continue to keep your kiddos safe while having fun at our facility.

Ways To Make The Most Of Your Time At The Rink

February 23, 2017 by blbaggett Leave a Comment

child skating

Everything is better on roller skates, right? Our team at Rainbow Skateland says “absolutely!” Roller skating is a great way to build endurance and get in shape. Check out some cool games to play next time you’re at the rink.

Freeze tag

Lace up your skates and have fun with friends with this classic game. One person is selected to be the “tagger.” This person goes around trying to tap their friends, while everyone else tries their best to stay away from the tagger because if they are tagged-they’re frozen!

Limbo

A classic game of limbo, on roller skates! See how low you can go on skates. Don’t touch the stick.

Relay races

Classic relay races are also fun on roller skates. Pick up speed and bring your team to victory!

4 Corners

Everyone skates until the music stops then everyone has to skate to 1 of the 4 corners of the rink. With their eyes closed, one designated person calls out a corner 1-4. If your corner is called out, you are eliminated. The game goes on until only 1 person is left standing.

These are just some of the fun games kids can play on roller skates. It’s a fun way to get the kids moving. Join us this week for Open Skate at the rink. Visit our website for session hours and admission details.

Tips For Keeping The Kiddos Safe in Public

February 15, 2017 by blbaggett Leave a Comment

holding hands

At Rainbow Skateland, we take pride in providing a clean, fun and safe environment for children, but not everyone wants to protect your children like we do. So, we’ve put together a short list of tips that’ll help with keeping your children safe in public places with large crowds.

Hand their hand. – Don’t walk ahead of small children that can not keep up. Remember, if only takes a second for a toddler to wander away.

Stranger danger. – Make sure your children know not to walk away with strangers. This will cut down on the chances of your child walking away with someone they don’t know.

Make sure they know who they are. – When your child is old enough to understand, practice their full name, address and phone number with them to ensure that if they ever needed help that they could be helped.

Keep an eye on them. – Never leave a child unsupervised in a public place. This includes play areas and rolling around the rink, even if they’re with other children as this could be a recipe for disaster.

Have a family safe spot. – In crowded places, it’s a good idea to have a designated safe place to gather if the family gets separated. Make sure your kiddo knows where the safe place is and to go there if they get lost.

Following these steps will help with keeping your children safe while having fun at our facility and later in life.
