Skate the Stress Away!

June 17, 2016 by taylor Leave a Comment

Do you know how to manage the stress in everyday life? We are more than half way through 2016 and we want to help make the rest of 2016 a great, stress-free year! music-69932_1280

Ideas for Managing Stress

One of the best ways to manage stress is to adapt a healthy lifestyle. This includes little things such as eating healthier, getting more sleep, and exercising regularly. Not everyone likes to exercise, so at Rainbow Skateland, we want to suggest something that might be a little different than your average exercise. Roller skating is a fun alternative to traditional exercises. Depending on weight and intensity, you can burn over 300 calories in an hour when roller skating! Rollerblading outdoors can also be a stress reliever as it allows you to relax and not stress about things at school, work, or home (rollerblades are typically the best skates to use when skating outdoors).

Another way to manage stress is to listen to MUSIC! Guess what?! We offer four music formats for your skating pleasure, all family friendly of course. They range from Kidz Jams to Pop to Rock to R&B to Gospel to some Old School hits. The schedule is listed on our website so you’ll know when you can plan to skate to your favorite jams!

Don’t wait — Decrease Your Stress Now!

We are Rainbow Skateland, want to help you manage your stress. So come in and enjoy a stress-free environment and even burn some calories with us! What’s your favorite song to skate to?

Win at Arcade Games with these Tips

June 3, 2016 by taylor Leave a Comment

Do you play arcade games often, feeding more and more quarters into the machine, wishing you could get those tickets to earn bigger and bigger prizes? There are some tricks that will help you get to the prize before you spend a month’s rent on those machines. arcade-games

Use these tricks to help you win at arcade games:

1) Jumpin Jackpot: Most arcades have this game. The best way to control the machine is by using your hand to do the jumping, rather than actually jumping. Of course, you have to be on the lookout for staff members!

2) Get More Tickets: For older arcade games, there is a way to get more tickets. Try pulling the tickets out slowly, rather than quickly; if you do it that way, you can gain a few more tickets!

With newer games, start the same way. Pull the tickets out slowly until you feel a click. At this point, the roll will let go and you can pull out as many tickets as you like!

3) Look for Stacker Games: When you play a stacker game, and you win a minor prize, press the ‘select/stop’ button and the ‘continue’ button at the same time. Keep holding the ‘continue’ button until the row empties.

4) Beat the Claw: First, look at the prize pit. If the prizes are not packed in there too tightly, go for it. If the prizes are tightly packed the machine has just been stocked and it will be tough to win. Watch the player in front of you. If the claw looks like it is too loose it won’t grab anything, move on. Finally, pick your target carefully. The perfect prize will be sticking out, unobstructed by other prizes, not too close to the side, but close to the chute!!

Grandparents Roller Skate Too!

May 20, 2016 by taylor Leave a Comment

Roller skating is an activity that has been around for generations and it’s an activity that people of all ages can partake in and enjoy. Grandparents who remember lacing up to roller skate during their youth and cruising around rinks and streets can relive those fun times and regain their energy while skating with children and grandchildren. Benefits of roller skating are both emotional and physical as you share quality time with your family while participating in a fun form of low-impact exercise. entire family

Working out without even knowing it

As you sail across the floor with your children and grandchildren at roller skate rinks, you’re getting an amazing workout. Happily, roller skating is so much fun, that you won’t even realize it’s exercise. Amid loops, turns, spins, and backward skating, you’re burning calories, improving cardiovascular health and strengthening the bond with your family. In a society where everyone seems glued to his or her smart phone and tablet screens, participating in this family-friendly physical activity has the ability to snap everyone out of their technology addiction.

Health benefits of roller skating

Along with strengthening family bonds and escaping technology comas, lacing up to roller skate has additional health benefits including:

Low-impact – Unlike other forms of exercise such as running that strain and damage knees and joints, roller skating is low-impact and joint-friendly. The fluid movements as you roller skate mimic those of dancing or running, but are thankfully free of impacts that can damage joints.
Whole-body workout – The strength and balance required for roller skating works your arms, legs, core, and cardiovascular system. Your legs and glute muscles receive the most benefits from skating, as does your core as you push through movements and maintain balance. Strong legs, improved coordination, and balance are beneficial for all ages.
Burn calories – Enjoy roller skating with your children and grandchildren and burn as many calories as other aerobic workouts. What makes skating better than traditional aerobic exercises is that you’re doing it with family while listening to great, upbeat music, making memories, and having fun.

Exercise for all skill levels

Even novices who roller skate slowly around the rink are receiving health benefits. The mere act of standing up on four wheels takes strength, balance, and coordination. Grandparents can teach younger children and vice versa and soon everyone is lost in the fun of the activity while enjoying quality time with family.

Fight Childhood Obesity by Roller Skating

April 8, 2016 by taylor Leave a Comment

Get ready to get healthy! Did you know? Childhood obesity affects one in every three children in the United States. This leads to early development of lifelong problems that are typically only seen in adults: type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Join Rainbow Skateland in taking a stand against childhood obesity. Here’s how you can help Lockport kids get healthier.

Educate Kids about Nutritional Health

If you force kids to eat nothing but broccoli, they won’t be thrilled about eating right. Child nutrition is all about balance and lifelong learning. Instead of celebrating with pizza every time you come skating, check out lighter options. Encourage your kids to switch it up and teach them the benefits of getting protein and veggies in their diet.

Stay Active, Stay Healthy

Healthy kids are active kids, and there’s no better exercise than roller skating. Not only is it a great workout, it’s fun. And when kids are having fun, they’re not worried about the sweat and aches that comes with keeping active. Roller skating is one of the best exercises for heart health. It also works nearly every muscle group, including the legs, glutes, obliques, abs, and even arms. Just request your kids’ favorite songs from the DJ and watch them get moving!

Roller skating is a great way for families to get fit. Do your part to fight childhood obesity by visiting Rainbow Skateland. See our schedule for our open skate sessions.

Have a question? We are always here to help. Give us a ring at 716-507-4381.

Your Birthday Party Checklist

March 18, 2016 by taylor Leave a Comment

Planning a child’s birthday party can be a lot of fun. There are so many options out there that it can be overwhelming at first. When planning a kids birthday party, we suggest starting with a checklist. At Rainbow Skateland, we think that a party checklist can make the planning much smoother.

Location

Perhaps the most important element in planning a birthday party is choosing the location. At Rainbow Skateland, we make that part as easy as possible.  Location is an easy one to check off the list when it comes to hosting a party at Rainbow Skateland!

Themes Make a Difference

The next thing on your checklist should be determining a theme. Before anything can be made or bought you have to decide what the theme of your child’s party will be. For a child’s first birthday, parents tend to rely mostly on a color theme and the number “1.” As kids get older they start to like certain characters or TV shows. If they are old enough to tell you what they like that’s great, but if not, then just choose a theme based off of their favorite toy or cartoon.

Examples of themes by age:

  • Ages 2-4: Pirates, princesses, dinosaurs, Elmo, Sesame Street, tea party
  • Ages 5-7: Harry Potter, pizza, circus, dress up, cars,
  • Ages 8-10: roller skating, movies, academic interestshappy birthday sign

Decorations

After determining a theme, decorations for the party should be next. You can choose to buy decorations from a party store or you can make your own. You can find so many cool decoration ideas online at Pinterest and other creative sites. Making your own decorations is a fun idea because often times kids can join in and help make some of the decorations for their party. Outside decorations are permitted at Playland Skate Center, so live up the theme!

DIY Decoration Ideas:

  • Balloon animals
  • Tissue paper pom poms
  • DIY pin the (tail, bow, wheel, etc.) on the (character of choice)
  • Character center pieces
  • Pictures

And after checking everything off on your party list the only thing left to do is HAVE FUN!!! And of course, we can’t think of any more fun than roller skating with your child at Rainbow Skateland while you celebrate their special day!

Cleaning Your Skates

February 19, 2016 by taylor Leave a Comment

So you’ve just purchased a brand-new shiny pair of skates! You wear them to Rainbow Skateland, outside at the park, inside your parents house (shhh, we won’t tell) and over at your friend’s house. Like with most new things that we buy, we typically get a lot of use out of them for the first few months and pay attention to every tiny scratch and mark that we acquire. However as time goes on, most people will stop worrying about the details of their skatesskates and forgo simple maintenance on them. roller skates

Simple maintenance of your roller skates can prevent injuries and can keep your skates looking good and functioning properly. Follow the tips below to give your roller skates a longer life:

Toe Stoppers: be sure your toe stoppers are tightly fastened to your skates. If you can twist the stopper easily with your hand, grabbed a screwdriver and manually tighten it. If you own Carrera Skates you will be able to adjust the height of the stoppers by loosening the locknut located at the base of the toes stop bolt. With adjustable toe stoppers, you really only need to verify the tightness a few times a year.

Wheel Nuts: just as with the host stoppers, if your wheel nuts can be  loosened by hand then it needs to be re-tightened with a 1/2″ wrench. Just make sure you don’t tighten it too much to inhibit the wheel from rolling!

Cleaning: Generally most rollerskates can be cleaned with a simple mild soap and water solution. Take a cloth and gently wipe away the dirt and grime, but do not submerge in water. Never put roller skates in a washer or dryer! That is a great way to turn a $100 pair of skates into a $1000 problem!

We look forward to seeing you wear your shiney and safe skates at Rainbow Skateland! Contact us today for more information about roller skate maintenance or for more information about skate sessions.
