3 Tips for Skate Maintenance

August 28, 2015 by taylor Leave a Comment

Whether you buy your skates from Rainbow Skateland or you already have your own skates, you want them to last as long as possible. Follow these following maintenance tips and your skates will continue to operate in top form for years to come! roller skates

When you first receive your skates, perform an initial maintenance check.

  • Make sure the wheels are properly attached, the nut in the wheel is firmly screwed in and there’s no give between wheel nut and wheel.
  • If your skate is a quad, check to make sure the toe stop is adjusted to your preferred height.
  • For quads, you’ll also want to check the tightness of the truck (the place between the wheels) and tighten that bolt as well.

After every skating session, check the wheels, wheel nuts and bearings.

  • Make sure the wheels of your roller skates have not become loose; tighten them if they have. A loose ride is a dangerous ride so keep your wheels tight.
  • Ensure the bearings are not wet. Wet bearings will rust or corrode. All grime or rust should be cleaned with rubbing alcohol; do not use dish soap. Dish soap will damage your bearings.

When necessary, perform additional roller skate maintenance.

  • When your ride is less smooth, check the wheel bearings. Some skate dealers have wheel presses that will remove the bearings, but you can also use a screw driver. If your roller skate bearings don’t spin well, they need to be lubricated.
  • Once the bearings are removed, you can wash your wheels in hot water with dish soap. (Dish soap damages bearings.) After your skates are completely dry, you can put the bearings back in.
  • Smell can be eliminated with fresh air and sunlight. Leave the insoles of your skates fully exposed to the sun to remove odor. Baking soda may also prove a viable remedy.

If you take the time to care for your roller skates, they will last for years and be smooth riding for a long time. If you invest the time into roller skate maintenance, you won’t have to invest the money into a new pair of skates.

Quads v. Inline Roller Skates

August 21, 2015 by taylor Leave a Comment

When choosing roller skates, you have two options: classic quads or the skates with two pair of wheels, or inline skates, with one row of wheels in the middle of the skate. Both types of skates are popular at Rainbow Skateland.

Many of the basic tips for how to skate are the same with both quads and inline roller skates. Skating with either one is essentially stepping forward and rolling the foot back, regardless of where the wheels are placed.

The primary difference between the skates is braking. Stopping with quads is done with the toe, but with inline skates, stopping is done at the heel. While both skates are propelled forward by the same step-like motions, stopping with quads means leaning forward onto either of the toe stops.  Some beginners find that more difficult, rather than pulling back to lean on the heel.

Where you roller skate, and for what reason you skate, you should determine the type of skates you choose. Consider the following:

Quad roller skates

  • Meant for in-door skating
  • Slower
  • Not typically supportive for the ankles
  • More stable

Inline skates inline-skating-99102_1280

  • Meant for exercise and speed
  • Optimal for skating outside
  • Made of hard plastic that encases the ankles, offering excellent support
  • Wobbly and require learning some balance

While quad roller skates are more nostalgic for many people as roller derby skates, the spread of the wheels means that even tiny obstacles are more likely to be a problem than with in-line skates, whether it’s a crack or a rock. Broad, smooth surfaces – like a skating rink – are the best places for use of quads.

While inline roller skates do require some balance, the wheels are faster and made for speed. With the skates all in a line, it’s easier to avoid obstacles, even the small ones, both from the decreased likelihood of hitting it and the maneuverability to swerve. When you’re looking for speed skates, you’re looking for inlines.

Whether you are in the process of learning to skate or choosing the right skates for your skating style, these tips will help you enjoy skating to its fullest potential. Go Roller Skating to De-Stress!

August 17, 2015 by taylor Leave a Comment

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines stress as, “a state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life, work, etc.; something that causes strong feelings of worry or anxiety.” stress-391654_1280

Basically, stress is all mental; now see how exercise helps: According to the American Heart Association (AHA), “…physical activity increases the flow of oxygen into and out of your body, which has a direct effect on your brain. Exercise also increases your brain’s production of endorphins. Endorphins are the “feel-good” neurotransmitters that are responsible for the coveted “runner’s high”—a sense of well-being and euphoria that many experience from exercise.”

Have you ever noticed that you feel better after working out or doing a fun but mostly physical activity? The explanation above shows why a physical activity, such as roller skating, can improve your mental state as well as provide exercise for your body. Being active can prevent those pesky moods and feelings of being overstressed.

Ready to give it a try? Join us at Rainbow Skateland and see how much better you’ll feel after a few hours of roller skating. It may just become your favorite ‘de-stressing’ pastime! Check out our skating schedule to plan your next visit with us.

We look forward to helping you acquire a better mood and less stress for your life!

A Beginner’s Guide to Roller Skating

August 5, 2015 by taylor Leave a Comment

If you are just now discovering the world of roller skating… Welcome! Roller skating might appear to be a difficult thing to conquer at first, but once you have a good foundation of skills, you’ll be well on your way to being a pro! You’ve already seen the rink, and a crowd of roller skaters having a great time. What’s next? And how do you get started? Rainbow Skateland in Lockport, NY has a checklist of things to get you started!  roller skates

What will you need?

  • Obviously, in order to roller skate, you need the skates. But since you are a first timer, some safety equipment is a great tool to have while you’re learning.
  • Elbow pads, knee pads and a helmet will help keep you protected while you’re getting the hang of things.

When your skates hit the rink

  • You’re all geared up, so now it’s time for the fun part! Before you start rolling around the rink, and doing tricks, you need to know the basics.
    • Place your feet shoulder width apart.
    • Bend you knees and squat slightly. This will give you a bit more spring, and aid your balance.
    • Find a sweet spot with this general stance that you feel comfortable with.
  • You’ve got the stance down, now let’s get moving!
    • To start rolling around the rink, position your toes outward and your heels inward.
    • Practice walking like this until you find your balance. You may fall a few times trying to get it just right, but that’s what the pads are for! After a while, you will gain more confidence and be well on your way.
    • Start to move your feet more quickly, and take longer strides.
    • Begin to push off harder with one foot while you glide on the other. Glide farther and farther distances

Look, you’re roller skating! It’s always a great idea to take someone with you that has previous experience to help get you up to speed.

A Brief History of Roller Skating

July 27, 2015 by taylor Leave a Comment

You may not think too much about those roller skates and how they came to be when you put them on your feet at Rainbow Skateland. While you may enjoy rolling, turning, and gliding across the skate floor, skating was not always as simple as it now is in our rink. Roller_skating_c_1905

Taking a look at the history of skating, it is evident that the first pair of skates recorded as an invention took their place in the history books in 1760. These skates, developed by inventor John Joseph Merlin, were made with small metal wheels and had their wheels in one line similar to modern day inline skates. It was not until nearly sixty years later in 1819 when the first patent for roller skates was recorded. These skates again were similar to modern day inline skates, but were still quite basic. Simple maneuverability was quite difficult.

A large improvement was made in control and maneuverability in skate design in 1863. A furniture store owner named James Leonard Plimpton designed quad skates with two pairs of wheels. This allowed skaters to turn more easily and led to the first public skating rinks in the United States in 1866.

As skating design continued to change and safety measures such as the toe stop, added in 1876, skating started to take off. Roller skating was largely popular in the United States between 1935 and the early 1960’s. Another spike in skating interest took place in the 1970’s with further wheel improvements and disco music.
