Why You Should Get Your Outdoor Skate On

With gyms and yoga studios closed, social distancing guidelines in place, and even skating rinks temporarily shut down, it’s hard to stay motivated and on top of your fitness goals. While we can’t wait to be able to reopen Rainbow Skateland, you don’t have to wait until then to get your skate on! Learn why you should try roller skating outdoors to scratch that skating itch and have some much-needed fun in the meantime. 

Roller Skating Outside the Rink

Roller skating is a perfect workout. 

We’ve waxed poetic about the fitness benefits of roller skating before, but how could we not when there are so many? Roller skating can burn up to 600 calories per hour if you’re skating really intensely, but even moderate skating can burn over 300 calories an hour. 

As an aerobic exercise, it increases your heart rate and helps improve cardiovascular fitness. But your heart isn’t the only muscle that skating strengthens; roller skating also tones and strengthens your core and leg muscles, especially the glutes, quads, hamstrings, calves, and hips.

Add in the improvements you can make to your balance and agility, and it’s easy to see why so many people enjoy using roller skating as a cross-training workout. It’s also low-impact, putting about half as much stress on your joints as jogging does, while still delivering comparable cardio results. 

Outdoor skating is almost as easy as skating inside.

You don’t need a whole new set of roller skates to skate outside; all you have to do is change your wheels! Outdoor skate wheels are typically wider and softer than indoor skate wheels, providing more stability and shock absorption to deal with the rougher outdoor environment. (Think sidewalk cracks, dirt and debris, etc.)

When skating outdoors, you should also wear a helmet, as well as elbow and knee pads. Even experienced skaters wipe out every now and then, and falling on a rough sidewalk or road hurts a lot more than falling on a smooth, clean, and well-maintained skating rink floor.   

Roller skating can be safe and social. 

We’re all looking for ways to connect with friends and family despite the pandemic, and roller skating outdoors is a great way to do that! Invite a friend to join you at the park for a leisurely ride and enjoy chatting and just hanging out. As long as you remember to wear your masks, social distance, and follow the rest of the CDC guidelines for outdoor exercise, it’s a low-risk activity that can help you maintain important relationships and benefit your mental health.

Summer by the Book: How to Make Summer Reading Exciting for Your Kids

Just like roller skating can help them burn off energy, improve balance and coordination, and get a heart-pumping cardio workout, reading is like a workout for the brain! Learning to love reading sets your child up for a lifetime of benefits, from academic advantages and improved vocabulary to rich imagination and a sense of curiosity and independence. 

Of course, as a parent in 2020, getting your kids to read is easier said than done. Check out these summer reading ideas to help your kids develop a reading habit and a lifelong love of books. 

Summer Reading Ideas for Kids

Start a virtual book club.

With all of the pandemic uncertainty around reopening schools, your kids are probably missing their friends. This idea is perfect, because it incorporates reading with some much-needed socialization. Start a book club for kids by inviting your child’s classmates or friends to a regularly scheduled video conference where they can discuss a book each week. If they have summer reading lists for school, that’s a great place to start, or you can narrow it down to a few selections and let the other kids and parents in the group vote on the book of the week. 

For maximum fun and fanciness, you could even treat it like an adult book club by having finger food snacks or drinking out of tea cups. Let one parent/child pair “host” each week by kicking off the meeting with a conversational prompt or observation about the book. 

Create an at-home “library.”

No, you don’t need to have wall-to-wall bookshelves to create a library in your home, you just need a little creativity. Setting up a dedicated reading area is a great way to subtly encourage your kids to spend more time reading. To put it simply, “If you build it, they will come.” 

Creating your own reading room doesn’t have to be complicated or require a big budget; it could be as simple as placing some comfy pillows next to the bookshelf in your child’s room, or hanging a hammock on your porch. And not to be ignored, there’s the classic window seat reading nook, just begging you to curl up with a good book like a cat in a sunny window sill. 

Pick a theme. 

If your kids aren’t particularly stoked about reading, one way to get them interested is to pick a theme that plays to their interests. Whether they love superheroes or dinosaurs, art or animals, curating a list of books on one subject can help them explore and delve further into their interests.

Take advantage of your local library.

Last, but not least, don’t forget to take advantage of your local library! Even though COVID-19 restrictions have caused closures and cancellations of library events, many branches are allowing patrons to reserve books online and pick them up curbside.

Whether your family has back-to-back birthdays and everyone’s tired of cake, or the birthday kid just doesn’t like cake all that much, these birthday cake alternatives are sure to make your celebration extra special! 

Think about what the birthday person enjoys and bake (or buy) something special just for them. A unique birthday treat will surprise and delight them, and make it a birthday to remember.

Birthday Donuts

Who could say no to a huge pile of donuts? Especially when crowned with sprinkles and a candle for wish-making! If the birthday person has a favorite donut flavor, you could make the whole “cake” out of donuts in that flavor, or for more variety, get one or two of everything and build a donut mountain with something for everyone.
If you want to get extra creative, display the donuts on a pole or pegboard! 

Birthday Pie

Are you Team Cake or Team Pie? There are some very strong feelings out there about these giants of the dessert world, so it’s no wonder some people would rather celebrate with a birthday pie. Icebox pies look great with a dusting of sprinkles or sliced fruit designs, while baked pies can be customized with artfully-applied bits of dough. Spell out “Happy birthday,” the birthday person’s name, or go wild with pastry flowers, animals, or patterns! The options are endless, so roll up your sleeves and start creating your own pie crust art. 

Birthday Sundaes

Birthday cake and ice cream often go hand-in-hand, but for a change of pace, why not let the ice cream be the star of the show? With some fun toppings, cones or sundae dishes, and good old vanilla ice cream, you can create your very own ice cream bar. Everyone can customize their own perfect sundae, banana split, or cone just how they like it. Toppings can include pretty much anything you want, from candy and sprinkles to chocolate sauce, nuts, and fruit. Kick it up a notch with mochi rice candy or “magic shell” chocolate coating. 

Birthday Pancakes

While they do have “cake” in their name, pancakes are a fun departure from birthday cake, especially if you’ve got a breakfast-lover on your hands. Birthday breakfast in bed is enough to make anyone’s day, especially if you complete the pancake stack with some colorful fruit, chocolate chips, whipped cream, or even bacon. Stick a candle in the middle and serenade the birthday person while they enjoy the most important meal of the day. 

Birthday Rice Krispies Treat

Who doesn’t love the snap, crackle, and pop of a Rice Krispies treat? The chewy, marshmallow-y goodness is just begging for the birthday spotlight, and it’s versatile enough that you can style it dozens of ways to create a birthday centerpiece. Mix rainbow sprinkles in or scatter over the top; make them in a round pan and ice to look like a regular cake, or mold it into a fun shape while it’s still warm.

How to Keep Playtime Clean and Safe During the Coronavirus Pandemic

However, experts warn that it’s still vital to continue social distancing, wearing masks, sanitizing regularly, and taking other safety measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 … Easier said than done for parents of little kids! 

Parenting during the coronavirus pandemic is a tough job, so bravo to all of you moms and dads out there. You and your kids are likely sick of staring at the same walls of your home, but you’re also worried about exposing them to the coronavirus when you go out. What’s a parent to do? 

Don’t worry, there are actually some easy ways to keep your kids safe during the pandemic without everyone in the house feeling like they’re stuck in jail. Keep reading to learn how to have fun, safely. 

How to Reduce Your Kids’ Risk of Getting Coronavirus

Clean, clean, clean!

We know, a parent’s cleaning job is never done. But cleaning—and more specifically, sanitizing—is one of the most important measures we have to defend against coronavirus. Hopefully you’re already following the CDC recommendation to sanitize door knobs, light switches, faucets, and other frequently-touched surfaces every day. If you have young children, sanitization is even more crucial as they are more likely to put their hands in their mouth or on their face. While you should teach all of your kids not to do that, let’s be honest—little kids are going to do what they’re going to do, so mitigating risk is key. 

The best way to disinfect toys, books, and other kids’ stuff depends on the material it’s made out of, so check out this handy guide to disinfecting toys for all the pro tips. 

Continue social distancing. 

As hard as it is for your kids to be away from their friends, it’s still important to maintain social distancing. If your kids are old enough to be trusted to follow directions, you could set up a park playdate with a friend or two and their parents. (Make sure you and the other parents also social distance, because kids learn by example!) Help the kids come up with social distancing-friendly activities, like races (you and the other parents can stand in as markers so your kids know how to stay in their own lane, or air space as it were), or soccer (no hands allowed!). You could even eat lunch “together” by sitting on picnic blankets at least 6 feet apart, allowing everyone to still talk without breathing on each other. Keep in mind that playground equipment is still off limits in most places due to the risk of transmission. 

Stay active, safely. 

If you’re not confident that you can keep your kids off of playground and park equipment and at least 6 feet from other kids, that doesn’t mean you all have to resign yourselves to staying stuck indoors. Just choose activities that make social distancing easier, like riding bikes or going on a family nature walk on a (not too crowded) trail or around the neighborhood.

3 Virtual Birthday Ideas to Celebrate Your Kid While Social Distancing

With their normal routines thrown off, missing their friends and normal activities, and having to learn the ins and outs of virtual classes, it’s no wonder many kids are stressed out.

If your child’s birthday is approaching, they may also be feeling sad and upset that their birthday plans are cancelled. It’s perfectly normal to feel that way, but just because you can’t host a birthday party in public doesn’t mean your child’s birthday has to go uncelebrated!

There are tons of virtual birthday party ideas out there, but these are a few of our favorites. Take a look at these ideas for virtual birthday celebrations and create fun memories despite the situation. 

Virtual Birthday Party Ideas

Throw a streaming party.

If your child’s heart was set on a magician, princess, clown, or character appearance at their party, consider organizing a Zoom party where all of the guests can tune in and watch the performance from home! The performer will be grateful for the work, and your kid can still get a fun experience with their friends. Even if the performer doesn’t have a set show format, they can still facilitate games for the kids to liven up the party. 

Collect video greetings and have a viewing session with your kids.

Birthdays are such a special time, and not just for kids! It’s heartbreaking for grandparents, aunts and uncles, and other loved ones to miss the occasion, but they can still make the day special. If a video conferencing party doesn’t appeal to your crowd, get them to record videos of themselves wishing the birthday kid a happy birthday. Make some popcorn, dim the lights, and have a “screening” of all the nice messages. 

You can easily organize this type of virtual birthday party on Facebook by creating a private group and inviting the friends and family members you’d like to participate. For bonus points, do a Facebook live while your child watches the videos so the group can see their reactions!

Host game night online.

If your kid and their friends love board games, a game night is in order. There are all kinds of cool options for virtual game night these days, from the Houseparty app (trivia, Chips & Guac, Pictionary) to Playing Cards to Scattergories! 

While these virtual party ideas don’t compare to the fun of getting together with friends and family in person, we hope they’ll bring a smile to your birthday kid’s face on their special day. Remember, once the coronavirus restrictions are lifted, you can still plan a party at Rainbow Skateland! 3 Ways to Keep Your Kids Physically Active During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Without P.E. class, team sports, or even the ability to play with neighborhood friends or use the local playground, kids are bouncing off the walls and parents are looking for ways to get their kids some exercise. 

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways for kids to get physical activity despite the coronavirus pandemic. 

How to Keep Kids Physically Active During the Pandemic

Outdoor Roller Skating

Just because we’re temporarily closed doesn’t mean your kids have to give up skating! Roller skating is an awesome full-body workout that provides cardio exercise and builds muscles… And you can do it outside of the skating rink as well!

To convert your family’s roller skates for outdoor use, you’ll just need to purchase and install a different type of wheel. Changing skate wheels is easy, and there are lots of tutorials online if you need help. Online Fitness Classes

Another great way to stay active without leaving the house is to stage a fitness class right in your living room! Check out some of the great free fitness content available on YouTube, including: 

  • Yoga for Kids: This video from Yoga with Adriene walks kids (or any beginner yogi) through a simple routine that can be customized for many ages and abilities. 
  • Bollywood hip-hop dance class: If your kids love to dance, there are plenty of cool dance class and choreography videos available to help them hone their skills. 
  • Family cardio workout: The best way to lead is by example, so join your kids for a cardio workout to blast some calories. 
  • Body weight workout with your kids: Can you bench press your kids? This family workout is great for little kids and parents alike. The kids will be thrilled to be included, and parents will get a whole new level of challenge in their workouts. 

Daily Walks

While there are lots of cool ways technology can help us be active, don’t forget about the classics! You can still walk around your neighborhood or local park as long as you maintain proper social distancing of at least 6 feet and wear a face covering.

Pandemic-monium: How to Keep Your Kids Busy While Social Distancing

Are your kids practically climbing the walls? Do you feel like you just might be living in a zoo? Is there a rising tension of possible mutiny and/or meltdown brewing among your darling family members? If so, you’re not alone! Stay at home orders and social distancing are hard enough for adults, but add kids to the mix and you’ve got a whole other challenge. 

While our skating rink is temporarily closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, we don’t want your kids to be sitting at home bored! Check out these ideas to keep your kids busy and entertained until it’s safe to reunite with friends, family, neighbors, and classmates in person again.

Ways to Keep Your Kids Busy

Bring back imagination play.

Remember when we were kids, before cool modern video games, hundreds of streaming movies and TV shows at our fingertips, and mobile games on every phone and tablet? (Look, we may have had video games, but Frogger and Space Invaders can only keep you entertained for so long.) 

What did you do as a kid? For many of us, some of the best memories from our childhoods are of playing pirates or superheroes in the backyard, playing dress up with odds and ends from around the house, “cooking” in play kitchens or “shopping” at a homemade grocery store. And let’s not forget good old “The Floor is Lava.” 

If you’re having trouble setting limits on your kids’ screen time, try getting there in a roundabout way: Set quotas for unplugged playtime instead. Chances are, your kids will have so much fun once they get into their imaginative games that they’ll want to keep playing. (And hey, you don’t have to tell them when their unplugged time is over.) 

Travel the world.

You may be stuck in Lockport, New York, but there’s no reason you can’t still travel the world! If you’ve got internet connection, you’re in business. Send your kids off on a (virtual) adventure to a National Park or famous museum. These are just a few of the cool cultural destinations to explore. 

  • From Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum to the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, Google Arts and Culture is a treasure trove of artistic, historical, scientific, and cultural marvels from around the world. 
  • Introduce your kids to the works of the Bard with the free content offered by Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, or get them hooked on Broadway with The Shows Must Go On!, a YouTube channel that posts a different Andrew Lloyd Webber musical each week.
  • Can’t get out in the great outdoors? Let the great outdoors come to you with virtual tours of National Parks and Historic Sites.
  • From puppet shows to workshop videos and more, The Center for Puppetry Arts has lots of great content available on Facebook, Zoom, and their website, much of it for free!

Missing Roller Skating? Here’s How to Safely Exercise Outside During a Pandemic

As many of you know, we are temporarily closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. While we understand the necessity of social distancing, we also know that many folks are struggling with the isolation, boredom, and inactivity of staying at home. Fortunately, there are ways you can stay safe while still having fun and getting some exercise! If (like us) you’re missing the skating rink, check out these tips to learn how to exercise outside safely during the coronavirus pandemic. 

Is It Safe to Exercise Outdoors? 

Most experts are saying yes—as long as you’re careful. Running, walking, hiking, and roller skating are acceptable as solo activities only (or with other members of your household). Staying active is important for keeping your immune system strong and keeping your spirits up during these stressful times. Remember, physical activity is a mood booster, so working it into your daily routine (even if you just do some jumping jacks in your living room) can help you stay positive.

Of course, it’s important to know how to safely exercise outdoors during the pandemic, so review these guidelines before you head outside. 

How to Exercise Outdoors Safely During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Maintain strict social distancing.

  • Go out solo. It may be tempting to meet up with a friend, but unless you are both committed to and mindful of maintaining at least a 6’ distance between you, it’s not safe to do so. 
  • Even if you are social distancing, it’s still best to avoid any park, trail, sidewalk, etc. where there is a lot of foot traffic. If it’s crowded, don’t go. 
  • Try to go at less popular times of the day so there will be fewer people around. Avoid areas like visitor centers where people may congregate. 
  • Remember to cover your cough or sneeze with the inside of your elbow. COVID-19 can linger in aerosolized form and infect others even if you don’t cough directly on them.

Don’t touch anything unless you absolutely have to—including your face. 

Coronavirus can linger up to several days on surfaces, so it’s important that you don’t touch anything unless truly necessary when you are outside of your home. This includes walk buttons at intersections, water fountains, handrails, public exercise equipment, playground equipment, park benches, restroom surfaces, garbage cans, and many other surfaces. If you choose to wear gloves, remember to keep your hands away from your face, dispose of them properly after use, and continue to wash hands frequently. 

Protect your home. 

Hopefully after doing 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity, you’re feeling more positive, energetic, and overall better! But before you settle back down on the couch to continue your Netflix binge or go back to organizing your closet KonMari style, make sure you’re not bringing outside contaminants into your home. Leave your shoes outside or in your entryway, wash your “outside” clothes ASAP, wash your hands, and be sure to disinfect doorknobs, light switches, and any other surface you or your clothes or shoes touched upon entering the house. (Don’t forget about your steering wheel and car surfaces, too!)

Kids Birthday Party Tips for Simple Celebrations That Still Bring the Fun

Like everything else these days, kids’ birthday parties have become quite involved. Add in the chaos of the coronavirus pandemic, and it’s easy to see why so many parents are looking for simple kids birthday ideas that can be done at home. Some folks have come up with extremely creative ways to celebrate birthdays while social distancing, from birthday “parades” to virtual brunch dates! 

If you’re looking for ways to make your child’s birthday special while still protecting your family and doing your part to flatten the curve, these ideas are for you. We hope you’re able to enjoy the day despite the current stresses, and we can’t wait to once again celebrate your special days with you at Rainbow Skateland when it’s safe to do so. 

Simple Birthday Ideas for Kids During Coronavirus Isolation

Celebrate face to face—on the computer screen.

Remember, just because you have to keep a physical distance during this time, doesn’t mean that you have to be socially isolated! One of the simplest ways to celebrate your child’s birthday is to host a virtual birthday party. With schools closed, your child is probably missing their friends quite a bit, so they’ll be thrilled to discover that their guests have all “arrived” to sing Happy Birthday via Google Hangouts, Skype, Facetime, or whatever your favorite video conferencing platform may be. 

Make it extra festive by asking each guest to create a party hat out of construction paper, magazine pages, or whatever they have on hand! Everyone can color and sticker the hats, and then do a show and tell to the rest of the group. 

Let your child plan a staycation.

Just because you’re stuck at home doesn’t mean you can’t have a fun birthday celebration. Ask your child to help you plan their “perfect” day of at-home activities, from breakfast pancakes to building a fort in the living room where the whole family can watch a movie together. (Birthday kid’s choice, of course!) You might be surprised at how much fun your family can have and how creative you can all get by just working with what you have on hand. 

Celebrate while social distancing.

For inspiration, just look to the families in the article we linked at the top of this blog post. One child got an amazing birthday surprise when his parents took him outside to see the parade of friends and family members driving slowly past the house to send their birthday wishes. The would-be guests of the postponed birthday party showed their celebratory spirit by decorating their cars, wearing costumes, singing Happy Birthday, and more. 

Another family enlisted their whole neighborhood to create an unforgettable Sweet Sixteen experience for their daughter. When her mom asked her to go on a walk around the neighborhood, she never guessed that she’d be taking a tour of birthday tidings! Neighbors had written notes in sidewalk chalk, decorated their yards, and even sang from their front doors as the birthday girl and her mom walked by. 

It just goes to show you that with enough creativity and heart, you can make any birthday special—even when you’re in the middle of a pandemic!

Mondays are the worst, right? Well, not anymore! Your hometown skating rink is changing the game with Adult Retro Skate Night. Find out why this event is a must-see addition to Lockport nightlife below. 

Adult Retro Skate Night at Rainbow Skateland

No Kids Allowed

You hear the shrill sound of a whistle, then the lifeguard yells, “Adult swim! Kids out of the pool!” Suddenly there are no overexuberent kids screaming, splashing, and cannonballing too close for comfort. You can enjoy the relaxing luxury of a kid-free pool, if only for a few minutes.

Imagine that feeling of relief, but instead of the pool, you’re at the skating rink. While we’re all about family fun here at Rainbow Skateland, sometimes grown folks need a break. That’s why Retro Skate Night is for ages 18 and older only. Don’t forget to bring your ID to this kid-free weekly event. 

Old School Tunes

Even if we did allow kids to this event (which we don’t), they just wouldn’t get it. Retro Skate Night is all about going “back in the day” with your favorite old school skate jams, from deep cuts to chart toppers. What were your favorite songs to roller skate to in the past? Drink Specials

This one almost goes without saying. Come on, if there’s anything that could make Monday, well, less Monday-ish, it’s a good drink special! Get your sip on and skate that case of the Mondays away.
