How To Maintain Your New Pair Of Skates

January 18, 2022 by Writers Leave a Comment

So you got new roller skates for the holidays or a recent birthday? That’s so exciting, and we can’t wait for you to enjoy your new roller skates! It is important to give your skates some TLC to keep them in the best shape, so they’re ready to use whenever you’re ready to go skating. If this is your first pair of skates, you may not know how to maintain them and how often you need to do it. We’re here to help!

Here’s how you should best maintain your skates:

  • After each time you skate, you should unlace and open up the tongue to let your skates air dry completely. It’s important to not use a blow dryer, sit them by a vent, or in front of a fire, as this can warp the skate. This will help dry out any moisture from your feet to prevent any mold or bacteria growth within your skates.
  • Once a week, it’s important to tighten the stoppers and check the wheel nuts. Trust us, the last thing you want to happen is a wheel or stopper to fall off mid-skate.
  • Once a month, give the entire skate from the boots, wheels, and plates a wipe down with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Also once a month, you’ll need to check your trucks and adjust them as needed. They should be loose enough that you can move them with your full hand, but not loose enough for you to be able to move them with your fingers.

Maintaining skates doesn’t have to be difficult, just a few simple steps to complete to help your new skates last a long time. We hope these tips teach you how to take care of your new skates – and we can’t wait to see you at Rainbow Skateland!

New Years Resolutions For The Whole Family

December 29, 2021 by Writers Leave a Comment

With the business of everyday life, it can get difficult to schedule time to enjoy with your family members. This year, we are helping you come up with three resolutions that your whole family can enjoy working toward in 2022.

Family Fitness

Let’s face it: you probably already have something on your resolutions list that has to do with exercising more or making healthier habits, and that is something the whole family could benefit from! Go on daily walks or bike rides with your family, participate in group fitness classes together, or try out rollerskating to get moving this year. Not to mention, you will have your family members to hold you accountable and make exercising even more fun!

Family Game Night

If you’re looking to spend more time with your family, set aside time each week to play games after dinner! Not only will this be something for everyone to look forward to, but it’s a great way to unplug for a couple of hours and exercise your brain whether it be with a game of Go Fish or a board game like Sorry. If you don’t want to break the bank on games, buy a standard deck of cards and choose a game from this list or look for games at second-hand stores!

Plan Quality Time

It’s easy to get caught up in the hubbub of life when you’re juggling work, school, family, and friendships. For this reason, it’s important to set aside intentional time to spend with your family. Whether it be as a big group, or one-on-one, doing an activity as simple making a meal together or reading a book with your child before bed will help you to grow closer with your family and build healthy familial relationships.

Resolutions can be difficult to keep, but with these exciting ideas for your family, they won’t feel like a chore. Regardless of which resolutions you choose to work on this year, the folks at Rainbow Skateland are happy to help your 2022 be a year full of fun for the whole family!

Family Traditions To Start In 2022

December 29, 2021 by Writers Leave a Comment

Traditions are one of the best parts of the holidays – decorating a tree, cooking a big meal together, and watching fireworks to celebrate the new year are all things we cherish when the most wonderful time of the year rolls around. So if we enjoy these traditions so much, why not make some other family traditions to look forward to each year! Here’s a few you can try out in 2022:

  • End-of-the-School-Year Vacation

You and your family members work hard all year long whether it be in school or coordinating everything that happens outside of school, and you definitely deserve a reward! Make it a tradition to take a vacation at the end of each school year to somewhere new! Whether it be a weekend trip or a weeks-long trip, your family will look forward to this tradition for years to come as a way to relax and kick off the summer.

  • Volunteer in the Community

Start a tradition of compassion and care for your community by taking time each month to volunteer for a non-profit each month. This way, you can teach your family about the importance of serving those in need and supporting your neighbors.

  • Plan a Family Field Day

A perfect tradition to start right at the beginning of fall is hosting a family field day. Each year, come up with games, sports, and obstacle courses for your family to spend a whole day playing outside. Some examples include wiffle ball, jump roping contests, and relay races. As an added bonus, invite other families in your neighborhood to enjoy and take turns hosting each year!

Whatever traditions you decide to start in 2022, Rainbow Skateland is here to support all the family fun you’ll be having this year!

How To Throw Halloween Party That’s #GhoulGoals

October 29, 2021 by Taylor Mcglamery Leave a Comment

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – spooky season! And after a year (+++) of social distancing and staying home, lots of ghosts and ghouls are ready to party. If you’re the designated Ghost Host of your neighborhood Halloween bash, all the details involved with party planning might make you feel like you’re being buried alive. Don’t panic! We’ve got a few tricks up our sleeve to help you throw the greatest monster bash your guests have ever seen!

Spooky Snacks

First things first, it’s not a party without a good snack spread. Any good halloween party host knows that the food has to be more than just delicious – it also needs to be fun! Don’t be afraid to think outside the box, and to get a little creepy and creative with your offerings. Start out with a Halloween must-have: candy! Mix it up by creating a candy charcuterie board that’s sure to wow your guests. Keep things seasonal by serving this pumpkin hummus or an interactive apple kabob station where guests can decorate their own sweet treats! And for a more substantial option that’s sure to satisfy even the pickiest palette, halloween graveyard pizza is sure to be a big hit.

Dreadful Decor

Cobwebs and jack-o-lanterns can go a long way in creating a creepy vibe, but if you want to go the extra mile in your personal haunted house, it’s time to get creative! One way to add some unique and spooky touches to your decor without breaking the bank is to go thrifting! Brass candlesticks holders, creepy dolls, vintage photos….your local secondhand shop just might be a trove of Halloween treasures. If DIY is more your speed, try adding these floating candles or a bubbling witch cauldron to give a mystical touch, or chicken wire ghosts to haunt your lawn as guests arrive.

Creepy Costumes

It’s not Halloween without a parade of amazing costumes! Encourage your guests to dress their best by hosting a costume contest. Award prizes for a variety of categories – best couples costume, best homemade costume, cutest pet costume, scariest costume, funniest pun…the possibilities are endless! For guests who might not be as prepared for a spooky soiree, stock up on extra costume pieces so that they can join in on the fun. A selection of funny hats, accessories, and a little face paint can help ensure that every guest feels welcome and ready to party!

Paranormal Playlist

What’s a Halloween party without a killer playlist? Set the scene for your celebration by choosing music to get the party started. Monster Mash is a given, but how do you build a playlist that’s sure to scare? Luckily, you’re not the first person to encounter this particular issue, and the internet is full of solutions. A quick search of YouTube or Spotify for “Halloween Playlist” will give you plenty of options! Be sure to check out the songs to make sure everything is age-appropriate, then hook up a blue-tooth speaker and start dancing! Voila – the perfect party soundtrack without a major price tag!

With these tips and a little imagination, you’re sure to have a party that your guests are just dying to get invited to this Halloween!

Things to Do With Kids in Lockport

August 15, 2021 by Writers Leave a Comment

Bridge truss, the current double lift Lockport Lock is left in the distance with the northern "Flight of Five" to its right. At Rainbow Skateland, family fun is kind of our “thing.” After all, we’ve been getting people into roller skating at our western New York skating rink since 1949. You can find people from several different generations all having a ball here during our public skating sessions, special events, and parties. If you’re looking for family-friendly things to do with kids in Lockport and around the Buffalo and Niagara area, keep reading to learn some of our favorite local activities. (Other than roller skating, obviously… Because that’s a given!)

Lockport, Buffalo, and Niagara Family Activities

Play tourist for a day.

It’s funny how we sometimes lose sight of all the neat parts of where we live in the daily hustle and bustle of life. Oftentimes, it’s not until we have company from out of town that we go out and enjoy the “touristy” attractions. So, why not pretend you’re on vacation, but make it a “staycation”? Get your kids to help you create an itinerary of local activities like taking a double decker bus tour, visiting the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site, or doing a scavenger hunt. Did you know you can even take a chicken wings “food history” tour of Buffalo?

Get some nature therapy.

Life is more stressful than ever these days, so it’s important to take time for mental and physical health. From kids to teens to adults, getting out in nature is incredibly beneficial. According to Yale ecopsychology researchers, “A growing body of research points to the beneficial effects that exposure to the natural world has on health, reducing stress and promoting healing.” Fortunately, we’re surrounded by lots of opportunities for basking in natural beauty, so why not load up your family and go for a hike? Some of the best places to hike around Lockport include:

  • Town of Lockport Nature Trail
  • Royalton Ravine Park
  • Devil’s Hole State Park
  • Walton Woods Park
  • Eternal Flame Falls

Expand your mind at local museums.

The area around Lockport, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls is rich in history, and there are plenty of ways to learn more about the place we call home. Explore the area’s museums, historical sites, and architectural gems, or take a guided tour like one of the ones mentioned above.

  • Niagara Falls History Museum
  • Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center
  • Lockport Cave tours
  • Erie Canal Discovery Center
  • Buffalo Museum of Science
  • Niagara County HIstory Center
  • Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village
  • Niagara Aerospace Museum
  • Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum
  • Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House

What’s your favorite thing to do with your kids around Lockport? Do you know of any cool things to see or do off the beaten path? We’d love to hear from you during your next visit to Rainbow Skateland!

Level Up the Fun with Roller Skating Games

July 30, 2021 by Writers Leave a Comment

Arm holding large, gold trophy in front of red backgroundIf you’re looking for fun things to do in Lockport, you’ve come to the right place. Here at Rainbow Skateland, we pride ourselves on providing family-friendly fun for all ages and interests. We’ve got mini golf, laser tag, a bounce zone for kids under 54” tall, an arcade, and—drumroll, please—a skating rink! Roller skating is one of the most fun ways you can possibly spend an afternoon or evening, whether you’re throwing a birthday party, attending a special event, or just checking out one of our regular open skate sessions. Want to make your roller skating experience even more fun? Check out these roller skating games that are sure to help you make some memories.

Roller Skating Games

You never know when we’re going to spring a relay race or skating game on you, but you can bet it’s going to be fun! (And hey, if you’re not the competitive type, you can always head over to the snack bar or the arcade for a breather.)

Four Corners

This classic skating rink game is good for all skaters, even less experienced ones. First, the game leader will let you know which areas are the “corners.” Music will play, during which everyone will skate around. But when the music stops everyone has to close their eyes and skate towards the nearest corner! The leader will call out a number that corresponds to a corner, and all of the skaters in that area are out. The game continues until there’s only one person left standing!

Freeze Tag

Another fun skating game for everyone is freeze tag, and yes, it’s pretty much just like the playground game, but on skates! The person who is “It” has to tag the other players. If you get tagged, you have to freeze in place until one of your teammates tags you back in.

Another spin on this game is sort of like musical chairs. The music will play while everyone skates around the rink. Suddenly, the music will stop, and everyone must freeze in place! Whoever freezes last is out and has to leave the floor. The music starts up again, and it happens all over again.

Follow the Leader

This is a classic kids’ game, but it’s way more fun to play while roller skating. One person is the leader, and they’ll lead the pack doing a particular skate move or routine. Each of the following players has to copy the move exactly, or they’re out! If everyone pulls off the leader’s moves, the leader is out and has to join the pack while someone else takes on the leader role.

Skate Races

Of course, no skating competition is complete without a race or two. There are several kinds of races to play at the skating rink, from team relay races, to backwards skating races, to straight up speed skating races! If you’re a more advanced skater, try challenging your friends to see who can shoot the duck for the longest distance or glide the longest/fastest from just 2 strides.

3 Birthday Party Themes Your Kids Will Love!

July 11, 2021 by Writers Leave a Comment

Jungle themed birthday party favorsParents in Lockport and the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area have been trusting us with their kids’ birthday parties for years, and we pride ourselves on delivering an awesome birthday party experience “straight out of the box,” so to speak. Our parties include everything you need for a fun and convenient birthday party, but you’re also free to put your own spin on the event. If you’re the kind of parent that just has to be a little bit extra (no judgement here—skating is arguably the most extra sport), check out some of our favorite birthday party themes that we’ve seen over the years.

3 Awesome Kids’ Birthday Party Themes

Go Wild

Who doesn’t love a jungle theme? If your child loves animals, a wild animal/jungle theme is the perfect way to liven up the party. Ask guests to wear some type of animal print clothing (while still being safe and comfortable to skate in) and include some fun jungle animal touches like stickers or temporary tattoos in your guests’ goody bags. And of course, the easiest way to include a theme is to decorate the birthday cake to match! If you’re a baker, you’re sure to find some interesting cake inspiration here.

Super Size It

Who doesn’t love superheroes? Whether your kid wants to be Wonder Woman or Captain America when they grow up, a superhero birthday party will be a hit with them and their friends. You’d be hard pressed to find a kid these days who isn’t a fan of Marvel or DC superheroes, so ask them to wear a shirt with their favorite superhero on it for the party. Use your child’s favorite hero as inspiration, and take your party colors and invitation style from that hero’s style.

Disco Derby

If your child loves dressing up and/or their favorite color is “anything glittery,” a roller disco birthday party will be a surefire hit. Ask guests to come in their best retro roller disco outfit, or just wear something shimmery and bold! This birthday party theme is perfect for tweens and teens, because picking out an outfit is half the fun. Once they’re at the party in their disco duds, they’ll love skating in style. (And likely taking a ridiculous number of selfies, as well.)

Do you have a unique birthday party theme in mind, or do you like to go classic and let the party speak for itself? Either way, we’d love to help you make your child’s birthday celebration a success. Explore our party packages, book your party online now or give us a call to learn more.

Cool Summer Projects That Kids Are Sure to Enjoy

June 30, 2021 by Writers Leave a Comment

Two girls drawing outsideWant to ban the “B” word (boredom) in your house this summer? Check out these cool summer projects and activities for kids that are sure to keep them entertained and engaged while they’re out of school.

Summer Activities for Kids

Learn a New Skill

There’s a special kind of satisfaction that comes from learning a new skill, especially when it’s part of a self-guided learning journey instead of a school assignment. Help your kids grow this summer by encouraging them to choose and learn a new skill.

Roller skating is all the rage on TikTok these days, and aside from being fun, it’s also great exercise. If your child is interested in skating but needs some help getting started, our roller skating classes are the perfect way for you to support them in their goal. Other skill ideas include:

  • Learning how to do a particular roller skating trick, like shooting the duck or skating backwards.
  • Perfecting a soccer juggling (or actual juggling!) routine
  • Experimenting with coding
  • Cooking a signature dish
  • Learning a dance routine
  • Or whatever they dream up!

Get Creative

Speaking of dreaming things up, encourage your kids to get creative this summer! Creative pursuits don’t have to be limited to drawing and painting, either. (Although those are fun ways to pass the time.) Find out what inspires and interests your kids and set up a space where they can let the muse run free—whether that’s crafting, writing, acting in an original play, painting, building a birdhouse, creating a short film, etc.

Team Up

Do something to improve your family’s home or neighborhood. Kids can team up with neighbors and siblings to make a difference. Here are some community service ideas for kids:

  • Pick up trash
  • Clean up a creek
  • Bust out the old Radio Flyer wagon and go door to door for a canned food drive or book drive
  • Plant flowers or build a community garden.
  • Collect recycling and make sure it’s properly sorted
  • Help an elderly or disabled neighbor maintain their lawn (pulling weeds, cutting grass, etc. depending on your child’s age and abilities)

Observe and Investigate

Another fun summer project for kids is to keep a journal, log, or sketch book. They can record the comings and goings of the birds at the bird feeder, research a specific interest, do experiments, or even become a citizen scientist.
