Ways To Make The Most Of Your Time At The Rink

February 23, 2017 by blbaggett Leave a Comment

child skating

Everything is better on roller skates, right? Our team at Rainbow Skateland says “absolutely!” Roller skating is a great way to build endurance and get in shape. Check out some cool games to play next time you’re at the rink.

Freeze tag

Lace up your skates and have fun with friends with this classic game. One person is selected to be the “tagger.” This person goes around trying to tap their friends, while everyone else tries their best to stay away from the tagger because if they are tagged-they’re frozen!

Limbo

A classic game of limbo, on roller skates! See how low you can go on skates. Don’t touch the stick.

Relay races

Classic relay races are also fun on roller skates. Pick up speed and bring your team to victory!

4 Corners

Everyone skates until the music stops then everyone has to skate to 1 of the 4 corners of the rink. With their eyes closed, one designated person calls out a corner 1-4. If your corner is called out, you are eliminated. The game goes on until only 1 person is left standing.

These are just some of the fun games kids can play on roller skates. It’s a fun way to get the kids moving. Join us this week for Open Skate at the rink. Visit our website for session hours and admission details.

Tips For Keeping The Kiddos Safe in Public

February 15, 2017 by blbaggett Leave a Comment

holding hands

At Rainbow Skateland, we take pride in providing a clean, fun and safe environment for children, but not everyone wants to protect your children like we do. So, we’ve put together a short list of tips that’ll help with keeping your children safe in public places with large crowds.

Hand their hand. – Don’t walk ahead of small children that can not keep up. Remember, if only takes a second for a toddler to wander away.

Stranger danger. – Make sure your children know not to walk away with strangers. This will cut down on the chances of your child walking away with someone they don’t know.

Make sure they know who they are. – When your child is old enough to understand, practice their full name, address and phone number with them to ensure that if they ever needed help that they could be helped.

Keep an eye on them. – Never leave a child unsupervised in a public place. This includes play areas and rolling around the rink, even if they’re with other children as this could be a recipe for disaster.

Have a family safe spot. – In crowded places, it’s a good idea to have a designated safe place to gather if the family gets separated. Make sure your kiddo knows where the safe place is and to go there if they get lost.

Following these steps will help with keeping your children safe while having fun at our facility and later in life.

Stretch It Out

January 13, 2017 by taylor Leave a Comment

Roller-skating is great exercise for families in Lockport. It’s low-impact, so it doesn’t stress your joints, it’s good for your cardiovascular health, and it burns about 600 calories in just an hour. Is your New Year’s resolution to get in better shape? We have 4 skating stretches to improve your skate fitness.

4 Stretches Before You Skate

  1. woman stretchingCalf stretches. Stand with both feet flat on the ground and place one foot in front of the other. Bend forward at the knee, keeping your back leg straight, without lifting your heel. Keep leaning forward until you feel the stretch in your calf. Switch sides and repeat.
  2. Quad stretches. Stand on one leg (if you need to, use a wall for balance). Grab your elevated ankle and pull your leg toward your rear. Stretch until you feel your quadriceps pulling in the front of your thigh. Switch legs to finish out the stretch.
  3. Hamstring stretches. Keeping your legs straight, bend down and touch your toes. You can also do a similar hamstring stretch sitting down. Keep one leg straight, with the other bent comfortably flat on the ground. Lean along your straightened leg, reaching for your toes.
  4. Hip Stretches. Place one knee on the ground, with your other foot flat on the floor. Lean forward until you feel your hip flexors open up. To stretch your hips and your glutes, sit on the ground with one leg straight. Cross your other leg over that leg, and gently tug at the knee until you feel a stretch in your hips and glutes.

Stretching before you skate increases your performance and decreases the likelihood of injuries. Stretch it out, then come skate with us at Rainbow Skateland!

  1. happy familyGet fit. Exercising more, losing weight, and becoming healthier in general is the #1 New Year’s resolution year after year. We all want to take care of our bodies, but with so little time for exercise, staying active can be a challenge. What’s the secret? Not a gym membership, that’s for sure! Studies show that 80% of new gym members have stopped going by the 2nd week of January. Instead of wasting your money, invest in fun family activities like roller-skating. Skating strengthens your muscles, improves cardiovascular health, reduces stress, and can burn up to 600 calories an hour.
  2. Spend more time with family. Reconnect with the people you love with a fun new hobby like roller-skating. At Rainbow Skateland, we have fun events and weekly skating for families in Lockport. You can also play laser tag, enter the Bounce Zone, play mini golf, or play in the arcade.
  3. Try something new. Learning a new skill this year is an admirable goal. As long as you can walk, you can learn to roller-skate. Already know how to skate? Master a new trick, try speed skating, or join a jam skate team.

Happy New Year! We’ll see you at Rainbow Skateland.

The Ultimate Game Changer: Roller Skates that fit!

December 5, 2016 by taylor Leave a Comment

Improperly fitting roller skates can be extremely frustrating, and if you are a beginner, it can bend that learning curve even more than it already was. But a skate that doesn’t fit quite right, doesn’t always mean that you selected the wrong size for your foot. While this is a very definite possibility, you may also just need to simply adjust the laces. Like skates, feet come in all different shapes and sizes, and sometimes minor tweaks need to be made. Rainbow Skateland in Lockport, NY wants to see everyone in our rink having nothing less than a great time! So, follow these lacing tips if you are someone who is struggling with this.

infographicskatelaces_1024-1024x1024

  • High Arches? If you have really high arches that cause the tops of your feet to be raised a little higher than most, relieve that pressure. Roller skates are supposed to be a little snug, but not uncomfortable.
  • Is your heel slipping? If this is you, and you have been fitted for skates by someone who is knowledgeable, try this lacing technique that will help alleviate this issue.
  • Toe problems? Let’s raise them up a bit! This particular lacing method will help to alleviate hammer toes, toe corn, nail problems and any other painful toes issues you might experience with your toes. skate shop santa

Roller Skating as a Stress Reliever

One of the best ways to manage stress is to adapt a healthy lifestyle. This includes little things such as eating healthier, getting more sleep, and exercising regularly. Not everyone likes to exercise, so at Rainbow Skateland, we want to suggest something that might be a little different than your average exercise. Roller skating is a fun alternative to traditional exercises. Depending on the intensity, you can burn over 300 calories in an hour when roller skating!

Pump up the Volume

Another way to manage stress is to listen to music! Guess what?! We offer many different music formats for your skating pleasure, all family friendly of course. Music has a unique link to our emotions, so can be an extremely effective stress management tool. Listening to music can have a tremendously relaxing effect on our minds and bodies

Don’t wait, decrease your stress now!
